Intravenous (IV) nutrient therapy has come to the forefront as an exciting new paradigm in integrative and functional medicine, allowing us to both prevent and help treat a wide variety of conditions safely and effectively. But why IV therapies instead of oral? There are numerous answers to that question. Oral supplements are minimally and incompletely absorbed and having to pass through the digestive tract, the efficacy of the nutrient or vitamin is reduced. IV therapies administration allows minerals and vitamins and nutrients to rapidly enter the bloodstream, bypass the digestive tract and liver then circulate throughout the body. People with food intolerances or allergies or other medical conditions often have considerable intestinal irritation at the cellular level. This means that malabsorption and loss of nutrients occur. In order for nutrients to be pharmacologically active, certain levels of blood and tissue concentrations must be achieved, and only through IV therapies can this be done.
High dose oral supplementation is not only less effective as compared to IV, but it can result in GI distress such as diarrhea or nausea. To summarize, IV therapies provides instantaneous therapeutic effects and direct cellular nutrition, bypasses intestinal malabsorption, enables high serum concentrations to be achieved and is extremely safe. There are many conditions that can be treated with nutrient IV therapies as an alternative to pharmaceuticals: migraines, chronic fatigue syndrome, asthma, hypertension, fibromylagia, macular degeneration, cancer, flu, allergies, colds, neuropathy, post-surgical wound healing, Alzheimer’s, type 2 diabetes. IV therapies are also used for athletic performance enhancement and detoxification.
IV alpha lipoic acid: Beneficial in reduction of neuropathy and endothelial vasodilation in type 2 diabetics. Also shown to be effective in pancreatic cancer with liver metastasis as well as hepatitis C.
IV vitamin B12: Shown to reduce homocysteine levels and nephropathy in end-stage renal disease. Beneficial in reduction of diabetic neuropathy. Treats Alzheimer’s dementia and cures fecal/urinary incontinence in post-gastrectomy megaloblastic anemia.
IV vitamin C: Used for “detox” and cancer treatment. It induces formation of peroxide in human cells, which is toxic to all cells, but normal healthy cells have an immense supply of catalase which converts harmful peroxide to hydrogen and water. Since cancer cells have 10-100x less catalase than healthy cells, the result is cancer cell death. Vitamin C is also has potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory qualities in regards to arterial endothelium in coronary artery disease, heart failure, Kawasaki’s disease. Additionally, vitamin C is beneficial in treating acute pancreatitis, jellyfish stings, acute viral infections, depression, wounds, allergies, and chronic fatigue syndrome.
IV L-carnitine: Reported to reduce adverse metabolic effects of long-term dialysis patients as well as type 2 diabetic peripheral vascular disease.
IV glutathione: It is a protein composed of three amino acids- cysteine, glycine, glutamic acid. It is a potent antioxidant and binds to dangerous toxins like pesticides and heavy metals through a process called conjugation which allows for safe elimination from the body. In studies, it has been shown to inhibit cancer cell growth and has shown promise in treating symptoms of Parkinson’s and MS (multiple sclerosis). Other conditions that benefit from IV glutathione include stroke, depression, Alzheimer’s and asthma. It is used for athletic performance enhancement and treatment of certain liver diseases such as cirrhosis, hepatitis and fatty liver.
IV coenzyme Q10: Beneficial in patients with congestive heart failure and those taking statins, lipid-lowering drugs. Also shown to protect myocardium during cardiac valve replacement surgery.
IV magnesium: Acts as a bronchodilator so is helpful in treatment of acute asthma. Magnesium relaxes smooth muscle and heart muscle and has vasodilatory effects on blood vessels, thus reducing arrhythmias and blood pressure. It is critical in preventing ischemia, which is lack of oxygen to tissues and vital organs such as the brain and heart. Magnesium naturally antagonizes calcium, so it essentially functions as a calcium- channel blocker which reduces the workload of the heart.
IV Myer’s cocktail: This is a powerful blend of minerals and vitamins which include magnesium, calcium, vitamin C and B vitamins (calcium can be removed for hyper- calcemic or certain cardiac patients). It is used to treat a broad spectrum of conditions: flu, cold, migraines, fatigue, allergies, asthma, hypertension, fibromyalgia, chronic viral infections, depression. It has been shown to enhance athletic performance as well.
Sermorelin: growth hormone releasing hormone (GHRH) which works by stimulating the pituitary gland to release natural growth hormone. It increases the amount of IGF-1 (insulin growth like factor) in the bloodstream and results in increased metabolism and growth of new cells in the body’s organs and bones. It is much safer than endogenous human growth hormone injections since there are minimal concerns with overdosing. Benefits of sermorelin include increased lean body mass, reduction of body fat, increased energy & stamina & vitality, increased strength & endurance, accelerated wound healing, strengthened immune sustem, improved sleep quality, increased metabolism, increased IGF-1 production, increased calcium retention for increased bone density, improved internal organ function such as the heart
hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin): hormone naturally produced by the placenta of pregnant women and almost entirely controls the metabolic function through the hypothalamus…by patient report, hCG reduces feelings of hunger and this allows them to eat very little comfortably…it is believed the presence of hCG in the bloodstream takes the appetite away…hCG is a pro-hormone which helps the body make more hormones and since hormone deficiency or imbalance is usually part of the reason for weight gain, whether it’s your thyroid, or menopause or andropause, this hormone offers help
chromium: mineral shown in recent research to burn fat and increase muscle even without exercise or dieting…it is believed that a deficiency of chromium can lead to type II diabetes
B12: info as above in IV therapy
MIC: short for L-methionine, inositol and choline …these are lipotropic agents that support liver function and promote excretion of fat while aiding in digestive function, storing & distributing nutrients, and detoxifying metabolic waste products
vitamin C: info as above in IV therapy
magnesium: info as above in IV therapy
testosterone: refer to info in BIOIDENTICAL HORMONE section for benefits of testosterone
AOD: works by mimicking the way natural Growth Hormone regulates fat metabolism – but without the adverse effects associated with other treatments (such as unmodified Growth Hormone).
CJC: Ipamorelin is a selective GH-Secretagogue and ghrelin receptor agonist. The potency of ghrelin stimulation can be compared to GHRP6 with less appetite stimulation properties. However, unlike other GH-Secretagogues this pentapeptide doesn’t release the same volumes of cortisol, acetylcholine, prolactin and aldosterone. It is for this reason Ipamorelin has been considered the first selective GHSecretagogue.
BPC: Pentadecapeptide BPC 157, composed of 15 amino acids, is a partial sequence of body protection compound (BPC) that is discovered in and isolated from human gastric juice. Experimentally it has been demonstrated to accelerate the healing of many diferent wounds, including tendon-to-bone healing and superior healing of damaged ligaments. In addition, BPC 157 seems to protect organs and to prevent ulcers of the stomach. This peptide is also shown to decrease pain in damaged areas. Those who sufer from discomfort due to muscle sprains, tears and damage may benefit from treatment with this peptide. It can also help aid skin burns to heal at a faster rate and increase blood flow to damaged tissues.
